Chapter 7

Brewpubs and Breweries in the 1990s

1993: 75TH STREET BREWERY

75th Street Brewery (520 West Seventy-fifth Street) was the first and longest-operating brewpub in Kansas City. Owned by parent company KC Hopps, Ltd., the brewpub concept fit well with the density of residents and local businesses in the Waldo neighborhood. The brewpub combined the family-friendly feel and casual upscale food of a restaurant with an American spin on a European pub. Brewpubs, where beer is brewed on site and the brewhouse is typically on view, became a popular model in Greater Kansas City during the 1990s.

Boulevard Brewing and Free State Brewing in Lawrence, Kansas, demonstrated that fresh, high-quality beer could be made by a local brewery. 75th Street Brewery offered a setting to enjoy beer at a bar only a few feet from where it was brewed.

Royal Raspberry Wheat won a bronze medal at the 1995 Great American Beer Festival. Muddy Mo’ Stout, Good Hope IPA, Cowtown Wheat and scores of other beer styles have been brewed and offered on tap. Since inception, the brewpub has earned five awards, including a gold medal at the World Beer Cup and Gold in the 2004 Great American Beer Festival for Fountain City Irish Red.

Six flagships and up to three seasonals were on tap at any given time. The recipes of the flagship beers changed over the years, but each beer retained characteristics of its style. The brewery distributed its beers only to sister restaurants in the KC Hopps family. By volume, 75th Street Brewery produced 1,080 barrels in 2013. Annually, production fell between 1,000 and 1,500 barrels.
